![]() ![]() ![]() People accused of black magic were often subject to ostracization and in many cases, violence. In most cases however, accusations of this type of black magic are often borne out of paranoia, moral panic, or mass hysteria against disliked or mistrusted members of the community, similar to the European witch-hunts. ![]() Some of these purportedly sorcerous powers may be explained by the use of poisons ( hilo or lason) and sleight of hand. These include the ability to kill another person instantly with magic spells, the ability to cast curses or the evil eye, the ability to "abduct" a person's soul, or the ability to send evil spirits or familiar animals to possess or harm the victim. This type of sorcery was documented as early as the 17th century by Francisco Combés. For example, adding seawater to a boiling pot "linked" to a victim is said to cause the victim's belly to swell and ache in time with the tides. In some instances, the ingredients of the ritual themselves determine the effects. The sorcerer then either harms the effigy to cause corresponding harm to the victim, or physically "sends" objects into the victim's body (which can range from insects, stones, to pins). These are activated by chants, spells, or symbols (sometimes syncretized with Christian or Muslim rituals). These are usually "linked" by including bodily exuviae like hair or nail clippings. This type of sorcery uses beetles, effigies, poppets, a boiling pot or some other type of representation of the target victim. Despite the differences in terminology, the methods are almost identical across the Philippine islands (and indeed, across Southeast Asia). This is known by various names like kulam, gaway (Tagalog) barang, hiwit, lágà (Visayan) tanem, tamay (Ilocano) and pantak ( Moro). One of the most common kinds of black magic is a malevolent use of sympathetic magic. The latter type of sorcerers are often conflated with the evil supernatural beings capable of appearing human, like aswang and manananggal. Unlike healers, they do not consider the justice of their actions. There are also "true" sorcerers who are said to have hereditary sorcerous powers. Their targets are usually "wrongdoers" like thieves, adulterous spouses, or land grabbers. Healer-sorcerers who practice this kind of sorcery usually justify it as a form of criminal punishment, as a widespread belief is that black magic does not work on people who are innocent. Today, practices are said to be centered in Siquijor, Cebu, Davao, Talalora, Western Samar, and Sorsogon, where many of the country's faith healers reside. Witchcraft has been present throughout the Philippines even before Spanish colonization. įilipino witches practice a kind of black magic, specifically a malevolent use of sympathetic magic, which is associated with Indigenous Philippine religions. The curses and other magics of witches are often blocked, countered, cured, or lifted by Filipino shamans associated with the indigenous Philippine folk religions. They are completely different from the Western notion of what a witch is, as each ethnic group has their own definition and practices attributed to witches. They include a variety of different kinds of people with differing occupations and cultural connotations which depend on the ethnic group they are associated with. Filipino witches are the users of black magic and related practices from the Philippines. ![]()

![]() This is a gorgeous title despite the sacrifice in frame rate and resolution, with tons of detail and every bit of content that other players got. ![]() Even when things get frantic, the frame rate holds steady, and as a result you get a gameplay experience that is remarkably similar to the version we played in March.Īnd even though comparing Doom Eternal on the Switch to the previous version highlights that a significant part of the visual experience was sacrificed, comparing it to other Switch games yields a different result. Sure, that’s half of what you’re getting on a PC or regular console, but it’s mighty impressive for the Switch. Panic Button was once again on porting duty and they seem to realize this very well, because Doom Eternal on the Switch runs at a solid 30 frames per second. So while the visual hit is something that’s to be expected and (to a degree) acceptable, rock solid performance becomes ever so important in the process. But while Call of Duty, especially in the single player campaigns, really excels through its visuals and lifelike narrative drama, Doom Eternal’s look and feel is much more about orchestrated chaos and gore with hellish creatures – which scales down a lot better than going into battle with human NPCs does. On the one hand, you already know that the visuals are going to be taking a serious hit on the Switch – especially when you take it out of the dock and play in handheld mode. ![]() The pace of it all really makes the game, more so than the visuals do, and that was both a challenge and a benefit in this Switch port. When we reviewed Doom Eternal back in March we commented on how it was such an adrenaline rush to play thanks to the fast-paced gameplay where you perform bullet-drenched dances as you navigate between pick-ups, power-ups, glory kills and challenging boss fights. ![]() Eternal is a 2020 title though, and the original PC and console release from March already pushed the envelope further than the 2016 version did. We’re checking out three of them today with the Nintendo Switch version of Doom Eternal, a complete edition for horror-puzzler DARQ and the Year One Edition of Phoenix Point, which is available now on Steam with a launch discount of 50%.ĭoom Eternal is probably the most ambitious port to date for the Nintendo Switch, joining the ranks of The Witcher 3 and of course the Switch version of the original Doom reboot from 2016. Sometimes you’ll exciting new releases that aren’t actually new games, but ports or re-releases of earlier titles. ![]() ![]() A sassy entrepreneuer's crazy marketing scheme. It is officially called a "goat-antelope." The more you know. ![]() No food = no need to charge (so long as you keep your distance, that is).Īs an added side note, the traditional mountain goat isn't a goat at all, by definition. The temporary closure allowed time for the goats to find other sources of food, rather than expect handouts from humans. Forest Service was forced to close the entire trail network. In September, it was reported that overly-handsy visitors were approaching and/or attempting to feed these wild animals, which prompted a number of attacks. Nope! Mountain goats are quite huge - anywhere up to 300 pounds, with natural instincts that shouldn't be toyed with. In late 2015, the New York Times and just about every other major publication and news outlet in the country nabbed onto the Gem State's now-famous "goat problem." Like many of Idaho's rockiest, tallest mountains, Scotchman Peak in Northern Idaho is home to large numbers of mountain goats and, in true wilderness fashion, these aren't your typical bouncing barnyard miniature goats. There are some words I used in the past in some of my songs which I certainly wouldn’t use these days, just because people’s perception of those words have changed.Take note: Idaho's wilderness areas are not private petting zoos. I’m not one of these people that rails against PC culture because oftentimes, to me, being politically correct just means being responsive and thoughtful about people’s feelings. You’ve had a very long career in comedy, and I’m assuming you’ve seen some of the standards around what you can and can’t joke about change.Ī. So we had to completely change that to give it a dramatic arc. That’s not what you’d see in a Hollywood movie. You don’t see any music biopics where the artist has a healthy, happy childhood with supportive parents. They’re the reason that I took accordion lessons in the first place. But it was not the case at all - both my parents were very supportive. He’s very anti-accordion and anti-song parody, and that’s explained later in the movie. My dad in the movie is vehemently opposed to his young child having the devil’s squeezebox. I’m curious about the portrayal of your parents as unsupportive. We try to make the song sound as much like the original song as possible, just for people to have that moment where they’re going, “Something’s not right here.” I like to take them down a road and then make a left turn and see if people realize I’m making that turn. It’s sort of the same with all my song parodies. But then by, like, the end of the second act, you’re going, “Wait a minute, this obviously did not happen.” We want people to watch it and think, at least in the beginning, that this really happened. ![]() Why did you decide to go with a tone that seems very serious, especially at the beginning, and then grows kind of bonkers by the end?Ī. I actually went through my address book when we were casting that pool party scene and just sent out a bunch of e-mails saying, “Hey, we’re doing this crazy thing on this particular date at this particular time if you’re in town and you want to drop by and be in a movie.” And pretty much everybody that wasn’t out of town or unavailable said “Yeah, sounds like fun.” Were there any people you were particularly excited to be working with?Ī. You’ve got a lot of comedy heavyweights in your cast - Rainn Wilson, Jack Black, Patton Oswalt. It’s played like a very serious Oscar-bait Hollywood biopic, and we wanted to really nail that. It’s obviously a comedy, but it’s not played like a comedy. ![]() But Daniel always felt like the right call for this movie. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yup, the game I am on about is a PC drive ’em up a title from 2009 called Zombie Driver. REVIEW CODE: A complimentary Microsoft Xbox One code was provided to Bonus Stage for this review. The Games We Never Talk About (But Should) ( TGWNTABS) is finally back again here on the blog and this time around it is to talk about a game series that is actually still running today and as crazy as it might sound all 3 releases since 2009 till now (11 years)never ever popped up on my radar. Certainly not bad, but unlikely to illicit any kind of emotion response. It’s enjoyable enough for a few hours of zombie slaying fun, but despite the additional DLC and improved visuals, this still feels like a decidedly mid-tier video game. Zombie Driver: Ultimate Edition is ultimately little more than a solid if unquestionably forgettable download only release. While unlikely to give the boys at Crytek any sleepless nights, at 1080p, 60fps and home to an array of new particle effects and double the amount of onscreen zombies found in previous iterations, Zombie Driver: Ultimate Edition, I think it’s fair to say, is something of a looker. ![]() Zombie Driver was always a relatively attractive video game, but on the Xbox One, it really has seen a jump in quality from the HD edition on 360. I’m not saying it’s inclusion would have turned this into a masterpiece, but given the irreverent nature of the gameplay, a bit of manic co-op gameplay certainly wouldn’t have gone amiss. In fact, the whole game suffers from a lack of online or local multiplayer. Blood Race on the other hand suffers from the games’ slightly inaccurate handling and a complete lack of online or local multiplayer. Slaughter is certainly the more enjoyable of the two non-story based modes with the simple aim of survival and high score chasing perfectly suited to the core gameplay and open spaces. With all previously released DLC unlocked from the start, Zombie Driver: Ultimate Edition delivers a relatively hefty single player story mode alongside a competitive race mode, fittingly entitled, ‘Blood Race’ and, what essentially amounts to a horde mode in the form of, ‘Slaughter’. In fairness to Exor Studios though, Zombie Driver: Ultimate Edition is home to a wealth of content. The vehicles handle fine and ploughing through zombies is always fun, but despite the mechanics being mostly solid (other than some strange inconsistencies relating to destructible scenery), Zombie Driver is invariably a game that you will likely bore of long before you run out of actual content. A score multiplier system does keep things immediate and a collection of enjoyable boss battles do a decent job of breaking up the otherwise rather repetitive gameplay, but despite these rare moments of variety, Zombie Driver is a game with few tricks up its sleeve and a reliance on mechanics and designs that are only enjoyable in relatively small doses. There are side missions and additional quests, but for the most part, this is a game about collecting survivors, killing zombies and getting the hell out of Dodge. It’s pretty terrible, but it gets you from A to B, so job done I suppose. Still, a game called, Zombie Driver was never likely to have an unforgettable narrative was it? That’s fine though the brief moments of dialogue are little more than thinly veiled excuses to get you back in your vehicle and back to mowing down all of those pesky zombies. Sure, there’s a story, and heck, some of the comic book cut-scenes are actually pretty easy on the eye, but for the most part, the story is utter nonsense and the voice acting, well, the less said about that the better. The core experience is exactly the same as it has always been – you drive increasingly powerful vehicles with an array of increasingly powerful weapons through hordes of zombies as you attempt to rescue survivors scattered about its clichéd, but nonetheless well represented post-apocalyptic world. ![]() But hey, regardless of my views, it’s back, and now it’s like ‘Ultimate’ and stuff.Īs always, ‘Ultimate’ feels like a bit of a stretch, but in fairness to Exor Studios, this latest incarnation of Zombie Driver (the third in total), really does feel like the definitive version of this forgettable but still, strangely likeable video game. It just kind of came and went and that was it. ![]() It’s not that it was a bad game, it’s just that, well, it wasn’t a great one either. Many of those releases come as no surprise The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, these are games befitting a current-gen makeover……….I can’t say the same for Zombie Driver. The current generation of consoles is seeing a whole host of last gen releases migrating across for a second shot at glory. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are in an industry that could benefit from this type of flextime, you should conduct a pilot program with a smaller team and see which option suits your business best. This is a system that works best for manual labor field teams, as the employees will be able to rest and spend enough time with their families even though they may be working very far from home.Īs you can imagine, there are other ways to adapt to the workweek. This practice means having your employees work for ten days followed by four days off. Merging workweeks is another option when it comes to adapting the workweek to suit your employees better. If you are considering implementing this practice, it will probably have to be partial, as some employees cannot work for ten hours a day and remain productive. That is to say, this isn’t a realistic option if the nature of your business doesn’t allow for longer shifts. ![]() This means that, if we are looking at a standard 40-hour workweek, your employees will be working for 10 hours Monday through Thursday. Usually, this means having Fridays off, but other possibilities are available as well. ![]() Condensed WorkweekĪ condensed workweek means the employees will be working for 4 days with a long weekend each week. Flextime challenges the efficiency of this arrangement and offers different solutions. The most common type of workweek accounts for 5 days of work and two days of rest. Adapting the WorkweekĪgain, we are starting with the usual understanding of the workweek. In contrast, the employees who like to sleep in will be able to do so, have their coffee, exercise, or simply take some more time to wake up while still handling their tasks. The ‘’morning people’’ will be able to get in earlier and have their free time. Others, on the other hand, want to start their workdays as early as possible and dedicate the rest of their day to other activities.īoth cases can greatly benefit from sliding working hours. On one hand, many people aren’t fully awake by nine AM and need quite some time to start working. However, this time frame has nothing to do with following a person’s optimal work rhythm. These eight hours have become the staple of the modern workplace. Most people’s first thought when it comes to working hours is 9 to 5. The workdays start when the employee clocks in and last the usual amount. This means setting up the earliest and latest points in the day when an employee can start working. There are many companies that allow ‘’sliding’’ working hours. So you may be wondering why introduce this practice in the first place. The number of hours doesn’t change in most cases, and neither does the amount of required work. The most common examples of flextime includeįlextime most often refers to the business practice of allowing your employees to start and end their workday at different times. Flextime encapsulates many of these practices, albeit taking this approach a step further, most often reducing the time the employees spend in offices. Many workplaces have realized this and are encouraging their employees to practice time blocking or other methods that will allow the employees to follow their rhythms. It is well known that people have different work rhythms. This article is going to explain everything an employer needs to know about this practice. If you want to learn more about flextime and see whether it would fit your company’s culture, you’re in the right place. It has become one of those buzzwords used to attract a younger workforce, and more and more employers are seeing its benefits and flaws. This way of working has been known since 1970s but has begun gaining traction in the last few years. Flextime is quickly rising in popularity in many companies. ![]() ![]() Robin desperately tries to win her over, but to no avail, so he ends up deciding to sabotage her date with Speedy.
